Stand up for what you believe in, even if it goes against the current status quo.

Hey y’all! Happy September. Can’t believe August is over already. It just flew by.

I know it’s been a bit since my last post, and for that I am extremely sorry. I’m sprinting trying to keep up with school and life, but I’m doing my best. Hope y’alls week is going fantastically 🙂

Just a quick follow up on my classes…. Problems with American Democracy is going to be hard. Law and Justice is going to be hard. Criminology is going to be hard, but that’s the class I am most excited about.  It’s going to be a rough semester, let me tell you folks. But I promise if anything interesting happens, I will tell you. Unfortunately, nothing interesting has happened yet. It’s in that dry, introductory phase still. Yeah, I know… Lame.

Anyways. The Republican Presidential candidates are going to be debating on Sept. 7, Wed. I am actually REALLY excited. I missed the last one (*sigh*), but I don’t plan on missing this one. And you can bet your bottom there will be a post afterwards, so be ready.

Found this really awesome article this afternoon. http://www.catholic.org/hf/family/story.php?id=42620

I would ask that you check it out. The article is about family and how, in this post-modern era, so many woman do not want a husband or children because it hinders their independence, or “freedom to be selfish.” It always makes me kind of sad when I hear my peers (mostly girls) talk about how they don’t want children. Or they don’t believe in marriage; they want to keep their freedom, their independence, their happiness.

But I agree with the author. I want to be married because I want to keep my happiness, I want to stay independent. I don’t think you lose anything when you get married and have children. Sure, things change. But life is about change. What you gain is more important. You gain love, happiness, innocence, knowledge.

I look forward to that time in my life when I find the man I want to spend my entire life with. I look forward to the time when God blesses him and me with children. It makes me all smiley every time I think about it. I hope that someday these women realize that what you gain with marriage and children is more than you could ever lose.

    Lucy,

I don’t buy that article. I know plenty of young feminists looking for a mate to marry. That article represents someone’s irrational fears.

But, ya know, when the economy is in utter shambles, and we’re at war, and our streets are littered with squalor, the Republicans SHOULD be talking about family values, the sanctity of marriage, etc…because clearly whether or not gays are allowed to marry is the most important issue of our time.

    I mean…Clearly…

    • First of all, my post doesn’t mention anything about gay marriage…. Nor does it bring up Republicans in any way. Or really politics for that matter. So I’m not sure why you would feel the need to comment about that…
Second, I can post about anything I wish. I really don’t care if you disagree that I posted an article on marriage instead of war or the economy. I would love for you to comment if you disagree on a position I take, and we can talk about that and have a little debate. But I don’t care if you think I shouldn’t be blogging about articles like this.

        Lucy,

Given the nature of this blog, it seemed relevant to mention. You should understand why.

And I didn’t say you can’t blog about what you want on your own blog. I didn’t say that at all; you inferred that.

First of all, my post doesn’t mention anything about gay marriage…. Nor does it bring up Republicans in any way.

“The Republican Presidential candidates are going to be debating on Sept. 7, Wed”

Or did I imagine that line?

Anyway, to make it clear, I am talking about the Republican candiates you did in fact mention.

I notice that in every single debate, townhall meeting, or event, the issue of “family values” and religion is talked about, sometimes incessantly. Hell, the bat-shit-crazy Bachmann just said that God sent Tropical Storm Irene, which killed 40 people, as a message to get our fisical house in order.

There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of puritantical idiocy. Bachmann would have fit in quite well with the religious fanatics who burned and tortuted people, including children. And in fact, most Republican candiates seem like they would have fit in rather well back then.

My point is that Republicans have nothing to offer except the same nonsense they’ve been spewing for years. They have no plan to fix the economy. They have nothing but pithy liners – “I got a credit upgrade; Obama got a credit downgrade. Hehe. I’m cool!” – and then the card they always play: traditional, family values.

I’ve read your blog for a long time, Lucy, and it’s clear to me that you are interested in social issues above all else. There is nothing wrong with that, but I’m simply factually stating that Republicans play to people like you while ignoring the real issues.

        • Ok. So shout out to the debate. If the Democrats were debating, I’d be watching them too. So really, your concern is that I mentioned the Republican debate in my post. I’m not endorsing a Republican candidate. I’m not even endorsing the Republican party at this point. It was an “If anyone cares to know…”

But since you want to bash the Republican party… They have their flaws, of course. But the Democratic party does also. No one who holds a political office is doing anything to help our country. They’re useless, as far as I’m concerned, at least in this point in time. They care about no one but themselves and their “constituents.”

Family issues are a big part of our country. Social issues are a big part of our country. As a pro-lifer, I hope you realize that abortion is one of the greatest threats facing our country. The only way to help those innocent children is to talk about it. Incessantly. I know you don’t care to discuss gay marriage, but it’s an issue in our society. Traditional, family values are being torn apart with abortion and gay “marriage.” It’s hard to ignore that fact, but so many people do. The only way to resolve issues is to talk about it. It’s like being in a relationship. Can you have a healthy, beneficial relationship if there is no communication? Nope. Can you be in a healthy, beneficial relationship if one person just sits back idly while the other individual does whatever they please? I don’t think so. It’s kinda like that with the government and the American people. We are not in a healthy relationship right now. Communication is the first step to resolving the issues and rebduilding the relationship.

Republicans may not have a plan for the economy… but come on. Neither do the Democrats. What’s their plan? To raise taxes. I think that you are just angry with the Republican party because you expected something better from them. You’re not sure what you want from the political system. You were liberal. Then conservative. And now it seems leaning towards liberal again. It’s one thing to jump around in politics, but it’s another to be fickle.
I consider myself first and foremost a conservative. I look at both sides and see which party I feel best exemplifies what I believe is true and right. Republicans aren’t throwing out the family values card to be difficult. They’re throwing it out because it’s important. It’s necessary for the existence of a great nation. The great United States of America. Isn’t it important to preserve even a little of what we were founded on? To hold onto the values the founding fathers believed in?

And just to let you know…. The Republican party is not playing me. As naive as this is going to sound, I am able to think for myself. I am not brainwashed. My parents didn’t tell me as a little girl that their beliefs were the only right ones. I decided for myself. I can tell when the Republican party is talking crap. But I can tell when the Democrats are too.

And I’m not sure what you are referring to when you say the “real issues.” Social issues are very real. Just as real as the economic ones. Maybe it’s you who needs to start realizing that.

            Lucy,

If you’re not voting for a Republican, then this blog is nothing more than meaningless noise. But we both know that isn’t the case. We both know that you are going to vote for a Republican, and I’m simply telling you that the Republican Party is filled with useless, pious jackasses who don’t give a damn about family values.

If you want someone to whisper sweet-nothings and tell you what you want to hear, get a boyfriend. Otherwise you should know that the Republican Party is using you, playing on your faith.

The Democrat Party certainly has flaws, but at least they say what they mean and mean what they say, most generally. They’re not out preaching family values one minute and bending you over the next.

Nope. They’re just bending you over – but in a nicer way.

Nobody is a bigger pro-life apologist than me. And becuase I’m a Lefty, I’m totally alone in my fight. And that’s fine with me.

But tell me something. If the Right cared so much about the 50 million children lost since Roe v. Wade, why the hell didn’t they do something about it when Bush was in office, they controlled the Congress and Supreme Court? All they did was ban partial-birth abortion which, don’t get me wrong, is important, but clearly an impotent response in comparison to what COULD have been done.

They did just enough to string people like you and me along. Nothing more or less. And they won’t. And do you know why? If abortion is no longer an issue, then the Right has lost an issue. They use the pro-life movement as a vote-getter.

Talk is great; real action is better.

No. I don’t care to talk about same-sex marriage because it has absolutely nothing to do with the most pressuing issues of our time, one of which being abortion. I’ve said that before. Opposition to SS-M is a religious battle that has no place in the public arena.

Traditional family values? You’re kidding. 50% of hetrosexual marriages end in divorce and more children are born out of wedlock than ever before. And SS-M is still illegal, so you can’t blame SS-M for the lot society finds itself currently in.

Truth be told, I’ve always been a liberal. Abortion is the biggest issue to me – something we agree on – and I found a home with conservatives, and so I tried to be conservative on other issues, at least tentatively. But it didn’t work out. The Republican Party is about as pro-life as Idi Amin, I’ve found.

We should indeed hold true to some good things the Founders believed in, but not everything. Not, for example, slavery….

I never said you couldn’t think for yourself. But I think you’re in love with the idea of a faithful Republican Party fighting the good Christian fight. And i’m here to say that you think for a second that the Republican Party best represents your Christian point of view, simply because their pious in their words, then I want whatever drugs you’re on.

          • The reason the divorce rate is so high is because traditional family values are being lost. I never said that gay marriage was more important than abortion. You assumed that. Abortion is THE most pressure social issue of our times. I think the Republicans are failing; they need to do more to protect those innocent lives. I’m holding them accountable. But you also need to compare Repubs and Dems… The right has done more than the left. Hands down. You don’t think the Republican party is pro-life, so you run to the Democrats. Good luck with that one. Let me know how that works out for those babies.

    Lucy,

The Republican Party is against abortion, so ideally, the children in the womb get to be born.

But then they starve on account of the Republicans’ opposition to social programs like WIC, foodstamps, and welfare. And don’t tell me they aren’t opposed to such programs – and don’t try to put a pretty face on it. They consistently try to reduce funding for those programs when it’s painfully obvious that many of those programs need more funding, not less.

And what about healthcare? Many children can find healthcare in ERs only, becuase we have no universal system of healthcare.

Honestly, what is wrong with a universal system of healthcare that covers children and pregnant women only, up until the child is 18? Who the hell is going to be against that? Outside of Republicans, that is.

Don’t tell me the Right is more pro-life than the Left. Not even close.

    And Jesus was a socialist.

    • Ok. First of all, you know nothing of Jesus and his political views. Let’s not bring that into this. It’s one thing to attack my politics, but don’t be petty and say trivial things like “Jesus was a socialist.” That’s nervy, even for you.

I think you are confusing what being pro-life means. Being pro-life has nothing to do with universal healthcare, food stamps, welfare, etc. Being pro-life means protecting the sanctity of life. It means being against abortion, against the death penalty and assisted suicide. Life is sacred. Universal health care is not. When you start passing out healthcare and pouring money into handouts, people are going to start expecting those handouts more than they already do. They won’t want to work. They won’t want to help themselves. That’s not saying the government shouldn’t help people get on their feet, but we can have different programs that teach people skills, rather than just giving them what they want/need.

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” ~ Chinese Proverb

The government can’t be giving hand outs left and right. We would never survive. There needs to be some line drawn. And you have no idea that Republicans would be against a healthcare bill that would cover children because it hasn’t been proposed. Has a bill like that gone through Congress? I’ve never heard of one. So don’t just assume Republicans would be against it. That’s an immature attitude and I think you’re above that.
