Growing-Up is Hard to Do

Tomorrow is my birthday. I was born on October 25, 1991.

I will be 20 years old; no longer a teenager.

One year closer to 21… one year further from the innocence of childhood.

Growing older has its pros and cons.

Pros:
More responsibility.
Greater independence.
More options.

Cons:
More responsibility.
Greater independence.
More options.

It gets so overwhelming sometimes! I am a very independent person; I always have been. I love being out on my own. But sometimes I miss those days when I didn’t have to make the hard decisions, when Mom and Dad were there to decide for me, to take away the pressure of choosing the right thing. I miss at times not having to think… 😛

And sometimes I appreciate being able to choose for myself, being responsible for my decisions and my life. I revel in the art of deep thinking, of comparing the pros and cons, of being in charge.

But then it can get overwhelming. SO MANY OPTIONS!

  • What do I want to wear today? (Difficult.)
  • What am I going to do in my free time? (Be productive and do homework, or take a much needed break and watch tv?)
  • When am I going to eat today?
  • Do I want to see people today and be social? Or take a “me” day?
  • What classes should I take next semester?
  • Should I add a double major?
  • What programs do I need to plan for my residence hall this month?
  • What should I put on my bulletin board?
  • When do I have time to read my bible?
  • Do I have time for bible study tonight?
  • When am I going to go grocery shopping?
  • When am I going to sleep?
  • What time do I have to wake up again?

There are many times when I miss the innocence of childhood; I miss not being so educated and aware of what’s going on in the world today. I miss the naïvety.

And then I don’t. I love growing up! I love being my own person! I love the responsibility (even though it can get tiring and overwhelming). I love the independence and the freedom.

20 will be a stepping stone for me tomorrow. I am moving out of my teenage years into the real adult years. Wish me luck.

First Day of School

Good morning my fellow college conservatives!!

So, today is my first day of classes at my university. I have to admit… I am kind of glad classes are finally starting. (I know, I’m a nerd.) But I am really excited for my classes this semester. Thought I would share them with you.

My first class this morning is criminology. It’s classified as a sociology class. I know I made a big deal about my soc. class last semester, but I think this will be slightly different because it has a concentrated study, instead of just an overview of a variety of soc. topics. I’ll let ya know.

Then I have French. Exciting. (Fun fact about me. I am horrible at foreign languages. I’ve tried Spanish, Latin, and now French. I’m in part 2 of French 1, and I’m already sick of it. It’s a beautiful language, don’t get me wrong. But I’d rather do Calculus… and I’m not even a math major.)

Then I have two political science classes: Law and Justice (which is my poli. sci. concentration) and Problems with American Democracy. Both sound extremely interesting to me. I guess I’ll know tomorrow 😛

I’ll keep you guys updated. And let me know which classes y’all are taking! I’d love to know.

Have a great day!

Can You REALLY Change Your Gender?

So, I was trying to figure out what I would blog about today… and I was thinking I might do a post on the “Divorce Parties” I saw on the news this morning. And I might very well still do this, but I came across a much more interesting article.

Inside the Mind of Chaz Bono

Chaz Bono, aka Chastity Bono, the daughter of Cher and Sonny Bono, is an interesting sort of person.

Upon first glance you would say to yourself, “Chaz Bono. Oh! This article is about a man.”

And you, tragically, would be wrong.

The “he” in this article is actually a “she” who has undergone gender reconstruction. Uh huh.

Let me tell you folks that I do not understand what is going on in our country, in our world, with this whole gender thing. I hear everywhere, mostly in school from my professors, that your sex is male and female, but gender is how you feel as an individual. So, you could biologically be a male, but gender wise, you feel that you are a woman… Crazy, huh?

Call me old fashion, but a person who has a penis is a male in both sex and gender, whether they feel like a man or not. Sorry, huns. That’s the fact of the matter. It’s the same for women. If you have a vagina, you are biologically a female, and you can’t change that.

But why is it that people today feel that they can change their gender? I mean, I agree with Dr. Keith Ablow in this article. In fact, I COMMEND him for writing this article. It’s very controversial. It’s very politically incorrect. And someone is standing up for what is right and true! Props to you Dr. Ablow.

You were born as a male or female, and as much as some people want to believe it, you can’t change that! And to all these people who say they were “born this way,” if you were born that way then why would you want to change yourself? Sounds a little hypocritical to me…

Ok, Lucy, so why can’t you change your gender? Well, I’ll tell ya.

Because you were born that way. Funny, huh? You were created by a creator. And I really don’t care if you believe in God or a higher deity or not. Something greater than yourself created you. You are biologically programmed to be a man or a woman. You have specific hormones to your GENDER/SEX. (Because I don’t feel the two are different.) Your chromosomes are different. Men have an XY chromosome; women have an XX chromosome. And it doesn’t matter if you go through “gender” reconstruction surgery or not, you can never EVER change your sex chromosomes. You can ask any doctor. I’m pretty sure it’s dang impossible.

And yes. You can get testosterone injections to make yourself more manly or estrogen to make yourself more feminine. *cough* And yes, you can do all that reconstruction crap to make yourself look physically (ish) like a male or female. And you can wear clothes from the opposite sex and change your voice and start going out with people of the same-sex, but have you REALLY changed? Inside? Really??

I don’t think that you can ever change your gender. Not to mention all the moral implications. And no, gender reconstruction is not a “right”. I think this is a great example of how morality really is being thrown out the window, and how we all think that we can just do whatever we want with no negative consequences. One day, folks, we will realize all the problems we have with recognizing human dignity.

OBL Pics a No Go

Found out this morning that Obama will not be releasing the pictures of the dead Osama bin Laden.

I’m slightly angered by this. I feel that as an American citizen I have the right to see a picture of the dead Osama bin Laden. I have the right to see the man who master minded the September 11th attacks on our country (God bless those heroes’ souls). Do I not have the right to see a picture of the worlds most known terrorist dead? The man who was no. 1 on the FBI’s Most Wanted List?

Apparently, Obama doesn’t think so.

Since I don’t have a radio in my dorm room, every once in a while I read the transcripts from Rush Limbaugh’s show. And he made an interested point today.

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_050411/content/01125108.guest.html

He said that the reason Obama is not releasing the photos is to distract the American people from the economy, from gas prices, from slow job growth, etc. According to Jake Tapper of ABC News, “President Obama is increasingly doubtful that there’s a compelling reason to release a photograph of Osama Bin Laden’s corpse…” Is he now?

I guess I just don’t understand this. Whats the confusing part here Obama? How do you not see a “compelling reason” to show your American citizens, the people you are supposed to be representing and helping, the death of the man who led the attack on our country?

“Meanwhile, sources say, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are advising the president about concerns at the Pentagon and State Department that releasing a photograph could prompt a backlash against the US for killing bin Laden where one does not seem to currently exist.” Just. Wow. Honestly? There’s no threat of a backlash against us from Al Qaeda after we killed their leader? Now that’s a lie. I mean, I’m not in the armed forces, I don’t work for the CIA or the FBI. I don’t have security clearance. But doesn’t that just seem like common sense? Common sense that we killed a leader of Al Qaeda, and OBL’s followers are now going to want to retaliate and avenge his death? Seems logical to me. But I’m just a little college student… What do I know, right?

The rest of Rush’s transcript is hilarious. I’d really urge you all to read it if you have some free time.

I’d really like to see these pictures. I’d like to see the DNA. Not so much because I’m skeptical that Osama is dead. Not it at all. I just like physical proof. I like seeing things for myself. I’d rather not have to just rely on Obama’s word. So release the pics Barack. Release the pics.

~Lucy

Take my poll! Should Obama release the pictures of Osama bin Laden dead?

Oh My.

I have many liberal friends. In fact, most of my friends are liberal. And they are one of the main reasons I started this blog. So I will be putting one of them on the spot in this blog. Their name has been omitted, for obvious reasons.

This is their Facebook status: when did saying “I like the President” turn into something so terrible as to make it almost reprehensible? I wonder if it’s because he’s Liberal, or because he’s black, or maybe just because he scares them because of how much he wants to change this country for the better…either way he’s a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

There are obvious flaws with this status. It’s taking all of the self-control I can muster not to comment on this status and start a FB debate (I have done that multiple times before.) But I know I’ll win the debate, so it’s not really worth it. Instead, I’ll blog my thoughts you to lovely folks.

HOW STUPID IS THIS?! Seriously, my friend, you need to open your brain and let the light in. Let’s dust out the cobwebs here…

Obama has done NOTHING. Let me repeat this for those of you who are hard of hearing. OBAMA has done NOTHING to help out country.

His stimulus plan was a dud. Cash for clunkers was a failure. How’s his health care plan doing? How’s unemployment? How’s the deficit that he swore would be reduced by half before his first term was over?

Yeah… I rest my case.

It’s not terrible to simply say “I like the president.” I’m sure he would be a decent guy on the golf course or out shooting some hoops or a good guy to consult for your March Madness basketball stuff.

But as a politician who holds the fate of this great country in his hands, he has to be… I don’t even know. An incompetent, not helpful, thing? Honestly. What EXACTLY has he DONE  since he’s been in office? I would LOVE for you to tell me… Somebody! Anybody! GIVE ME ANSWERS!

He certainly is liberal, can’t lie with that.

He’s, ummm, black? Correction. He is half black. More correctly he is “mixed race.” Let’s, again, get our facts straight. That’s an easy one… And one thing I don’t understand that relates to this black comment… In a world that wants to eliminate race, how come it’s always shoved in our faces? Oh! We have a black president! If skin color didn’t matter, then how come we give it so much emphasis? Just some food for thought. I like challenging y’all.

I don’t know about y’all, but I am scared of Obama. Definitely. I’m scared that he has people believing that he wants to change people for the better. I’m scared that he still has followers. I’m scared that people still like him. I’m scared of the ideas he is able to concoct. I’m scared of our deficit. I’m scared of the unemployment rates. I’m scared of him being reelected into office in 2012. I’m scared of the stupidity of some people (of my friends!). I’m scared of the direction our country is going under Obama. I’m scared of ObamaCare. I’m scared of what our taxes could look like in a few years.

Another question… What in the world is the alternative? If Obama is better than it, then it must be Hitler or a scary, 3-headed monster that is going to eat all Americans. Lol.

I don’t think this is what my dear friend means. If I had to guess, the alternative is the Republicans, the Tea-Partiers, the *gasp* CONSERVATIVES!!! Oooooh, the horrors! Save us all! Obama! Where is our savior?!

Good grief. When I heard S.E. Cupp speak, she said something extremely profound… (It’s paraphrased a little, but you’ll get the gist.) “We are all born conservative. We don’t want to pay high taxes or be indebted to the government or have our lives controlled by others who think they have the right to control it.” Well said, S.E. Who in their right mind (no pun intended) wants to have their lives controlled by other people? Not me, say I. I think I’ll run my own life, thanks.

If only my thick friends and all other liberals out there were smart enough to think the same way… Ahhh. Sweet wishes.

How Great Thou Art… Israel?

Here we go folks. I’ve decided I am going to share my opinion on this whole TSA pat down shenanigans.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/04/30/miss-usa-says-molested-tsa-airport/

This is an article, with an accompanied video, about a former Miss USA winner who said she felt molested by the TSA agent who was patting her down.

I don’t really want to talk about this article in particular, but I included it because I thought it was interesting.

Personally, I think it’s ridiculous. The problem with our airport “security” is that it’s REACTIVE. They react to terrorist attacks, bombs, bomb threats, the whole liquid bomb thing, the underwear bomber, the Christmas day bomber. And the problem with all these reactions are that, well, they’re not really that effective.

Our airport and transportation security needs to start being more proactive. I know that this is a big statement, and you’ll probably say, “Hey! Lucy! How do you expect them to do this huh? Don’t talk big.”

I think that we can be proactive by making taking a few pointers from different countries. Take Israel for example. Their security is considered one of the best in the world! Don’t believe me? Google it. You can find numerous articles about their security.

http://www.slate.com/id/2279753/ Here is one article about their security. And yes, included in the article is *gasp*! PROFILING!

NO NO NO. Not profiling! Lucy! It’s outrageous. You’re crazy to be condoning this nonsense.

No, I’m not. You are crazy. Read the article. I know this is just one example, but there are so many other examples out there too!

Israel’s airports use profiling to HELP keep them safe. To help keep the people safe. It’s not all entirely racial profiling, so let’s calm down here people. Their government asks the travelers a series of questions and check for nerves, uneasiness, signs that a possible terrorist might portray. Seems harmless to me. If you aren’t a terrorist, then there isn’t any reason to fear these questions. Honestly, they’re QUESTIONS. I get asked a million questions a day. I know you get asked a million questions a day. Oooo, scary. And a small percentage of their people get send back for secondary questioning. And yes, ok, race probably has something to do with it. But honestly, how can it not? I’m not racist, at all. But how many of those bombers are white? How many of them were not Muslims? It’s realism.

Seems like this system is a PROACTIVE way of keeping out terrorists…

So how hard would it be to answer a few questions? I mean, I honestly don’t think it would take up that much time. How long do you stand in the security line waiting for the TSA agent to look at your ID? They look at it. Look at your ticket. Point the flash light back at your ID. Look back to your ticket again. Back to your ID. NOW to your face. Then ID again. And FINALLY. Hand it back to you. Hmm…Yeah. I know they’ve changed this now, but there was a point in time when you had to hand your ID and ticket to another TSA agent as you were walking through the scanner. Because the first guy can’t tell my name is the same on the ticket and ID right? Right.

I mean, seriously. And NOW we have these crazy body scanners that give a view of a person virtually without their clothes? Seems helpful. I can see all your curves, all your junk, but seems as if your clear to go ahead. Thanks bud.

Bombs are being made from plastic now, so that would make metal detectors obsolete I would think.

And if I refuse this body scanner, just as the Miss USA did in the article above, I have to subject myself to a “pat down” from a TSA agent that probably would resemble molestation. There was a clip I saw a few months ago on Fox of a guy getting manhandled by a TSA agent, and my Dad very bluntly said, “I would have kick that idiot in the face.” Very well said, Dad. Can’t say I’d blame him. Absolutely ridiculous. I have also seen videos on the news of kids getting patted down. I mean, honestly. Let’s be a little realistic. I doubt even the Israeli’s would treat children as terrorists… It’s quite disgusting. I think for the sake of time, my dignity, and the sake and safety of the TSA worker, I would just do the body scanner. Enjoy the view.

We just aren’t doing a good job protecting the US people. We can step it up. In this technological age, we should be more technological. And we should definitely be taking some MAJOR pointers from the Israelis. Yup. You know? Those people in that little country all the way over there?

And just to clarify… I’m not saying that we completely overhaul our system to make exactly that of Israel’s. I’m simply saying, “Let’s continue learning.”

Share your thoughts with me!

Some other articles I found!

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3988578,00.html

http://www.forward.com/articles/122781/

Hmm… one more interesting observation. I was curious on what CNN thought of Israel’s airport security. So I typed it into their website. The Results: Egypt, Egyptian unrest, “Why terrorists attack airports?”, something on Russia, OH! Finally, “Reconsider profiling?” Close enough CNN.

http://caffertyfile.blogs.cnn.com/2010/11/24/time-to-reconsider-profiling-for-airport-security/?iref=allsearch (If so many people support it… how come it hasn’t been implemented? Someone answer me!)

Homosexual Activist Bullies Lose: Attorney Paul Clement Will Defend Marriage

http://www.catholic.org/national/national_story.php?id=41180

I know I say this quite a bit, but this was an interesting article. It touches on Boehner hiring Attorney Paul Clement to defend the Defense of Marriage Act.

As I’m sure you are all aware of, Obama contradicts himself when it comes to gay marriage. He’ll say he’s not sure where he stands, that he believes marriage (because of his Christian faith) is between one man, a woman, and God. But then he goes and orders the Justice Department to stop defending marriage. He goes and doesn’t defend the sanctity of marriage but instead attempts to crush it.

So, ok. The problem I have with this is that Obama thinks he has the right to order and demand the Justice Department, which last time I checked was part of the Judiciary branch of our government, not the executive, to stop upholding a constitutional law. (Yes, I believe and know that it is constitutional. We have to uphold some moral standard in our country.)

Let’s take an US Government lesson, shall we.

There are 3 branches of our government: the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, and the Judiciary Branch.

The Legislative Branch is the lawmakers, Congress-the Senate and the House. They are able to make laws that are then sent to the President to either be signed or vetoed. Check.

The Executive Branch is the President of the United States. He enforces/executes (ah haa) laws, signs laws into action. He is able to check the Legislative branch using Vetoes and Pocket Vetoes. Ok.

The Judicial Branch upholds the constitution. They are able to declare laws unconstitutional and constitutional. They check both the Executive and Legislative branches in a few different ways.

I mean, not sure about you guys, but I don’t see anywhere in that little mini-lesson (unless I left something important out) that gives the President the right to ORDER the Judicial Branch to stop defending the sanctity of marriage. He just doesn’t have that right. If they rule it constitutional, then he needs to respect that. The President cannot make laws and he cannot declare them unconstitutional. Maybe Obama needs to look up his job description again…

I am completely behind Boehner and Paul Clement on this. It’s about time someone stood and up and said STOP. We are going to defend the morals of this country. We are going to defend the sanctity of marriage, between one man and one woman. We are not going to let you make a mockery of it.

Shame on the Human Rights Campaign for trying to “bully” Clement into backing down. What? Are we in 5th grade now that we can’t behave like adults? Let’s man up here people! We get a lot of crap when we stand up for the truth in marriage. How about we start dishing some of that crap back out to people who try to silence us, huh? Let’s stand up for what he know is right and true! How about we start calling them out for what they really are? They want to silence us, and we cannot be silenced.

Clement has some really great quotes throughout the article. I encourage everyone to read it. It’s very educational.

Have a great day!
